Your contract with Uniplaces will always have a start date and an end date; this is what usually decides how much you will be paying, especially on the months you move in and move out.
Please note that, regardless of the length of your contract, the payment you transfer to Uniplaces will always correspond to one month of rent.
There are four types of contracts:
Fortnightly: On a fortnightly contract, your contract will always start at the beginning of the first fortnight (the first 2 weeks) of the month. The first fortnight of every month goes from the 1st until the 15th, and the second fortnight goes from the 16th until the end of any given month.
For example, if your move-in date is on September 20 and your move-out date is on October 20, the full length of your contract is 3 fortnights. Since the payment you transfer to Uniplaces always corresponds to one month of rent, in this case it would correspond to the period between September 16 and October 15. Since your move-out date is on October 20, you would need to pay an additional fortnight to the landlord. In these cases, it's always best to extend your move-out date until the end of the month.
Fixed: In a fixed contract, the landlord sets a fixed start and end date for the contract, and you're always required to pay for the full period. A fixed contract can cover six months, for example, and you are required to pay six months of rent, regardless of whether you stay for the full period. As always, Uniplaces only charges you the first month though; the following ones have to be paid to the landlord directly.
Monthly: In a monthly contract, you are always charged for a whole month, regardless of how many days of that month you stay. For example, if you move in on September 20, you are still required to pay for the whole month of September; this is why monthly contracts always start on the first day of the month.
Daily: In a daily contract, the rent is calculated according to the number of days you're staying, always taking into account the minimum stay required for each city and for each landlord. It's not possible to book one single night through Uniplaces, for example.
Remember to check out which type of contract applies to the places you're interested in. You can find the type of contract a landlord has under the Rental Conditions section, in "Contract", in every listing. After a landlord accepts a booking, it's no longer possible to change your move-in and move-out dates.
